Many great family stories have its roots in the unknown moments of fellowship experienced when love was shared with an amazing plate of food or with the fresh hearty smell of warm baked recipes, handed down from previous generations

Holding on to our heritage is integral for our understanding of our own identity and what is more South African, than a home-made rusk recipe, that has been handed down to us, by our grandmothers or great-grandmothers.

It was no different with the Steenkamp-Mostert family rusk recipe, that was handed down as a basic recipe in 2008. This recipe was initially tucked away in a recipe book in one of the corners of private family kitchen cabinet for some time.

It came as a huge surprise that this recipe, was successful from the very first baked batch, even though it was baked by Steenkamp-Mostert family members, who would not regard themselves as master rusk bakers.

After the first baking successes, family members started suggestion improvements and eventually more ingredients were added to cater to the taste of the young and old members of the family.

The refined recipes became part of the backbone of family life in the Steenkamp-Mostert households and the rusks were baked as act of care and as compassionate gifts, to family friends.

On Monday 20 September 2021 on the day of a family member’s memorial, the improved rusk recipe of Sophia Margretha Magdalena Steenkamp, was again shared by the Steenkamp-Mostert families, remembering the love and care and kindness of this incredible matriarch. It was then when the decision was made, to share this rusk recipe far and wide, with the hope that every single person who shares this delicious treat with their families and friends, would also share in the love and goodness of new memories made by and for future generations.
